Substance Use Awareness and Prevention Program for Medical Students
IDRAAC, implemented this project in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Balamand and with the funding of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The main objective of the project was to improve and strengthen the student’s awareness on the effects of substance use. Following these surveys, a group of 16 medical student volunteers were recruited and trained to have the necessary skills to be able to become mediators of substance use awareness for their peers and future patients. These students delivered workshops to 240 medical students. These lectures included information regarding 8 substances (nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, psychedelics and hallucinogens, and sedatives and hypnotics) inclusive of all the intoxication and withdrawal symptoms as well as the medical co-morbidities and the legal status of these substances in Lebanon. Meanwhile, a Facebook page was designed as well as posters to raise awareness through social media in the medical community and among the medical students.
