Discusses specific factors that create mental health problems, or exacerbate preexisting ones, for Americans living in Saudi ArabiAlthough many Americans make an uneventful adjustment to the new environment, there are cultural factors that impose stresses. For example, the forced dependency of women created by the prohibition against their driving creates a sense of inequality between the sexes and introduces the issue of dependency into marital relationships. The restrictive rules of Saudi society may create feelings of anger and depression in American women, who feel confined and helpless in this setting. The anger is often brought into the marital relationship, which is further stressed because of the lack of outside outlets to diffuse conflicts.
