Inpatient sociodemographic and diagnostic study from a psychiatric hospital in Libya.

Reported the sociodemographic and diagnostic characteristics of 1,009 patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Libya in 1 calendar yr. 504 Ss were 1st admission cases. There was an average of 2.05 admissions for each readmission case. 89% of the Ss were of Libyan origin, of whom 62% were males, 66% were 15-34 yrs old, 37% were married, 28% were unemployed, and 16% were in the military service. Schizophrenic psychoses (SPs) was the most common diagnosis (39%), followed by affective psychoses (APs (17%)), neurotic disorders (NDs (12%)), organic psychosis (8%), and acute psychosis (7%). Neurotic depression was the most common type of neurotic disorder and antisocial personality was the most common among personality disorders. Out of 682 Ss with SPs, APs, and NDs 306 were 1st admission cases.
