Discusses Egyptian clinical practice and categorization of psychiatric patients. The Egyptian Diagnostic Manual of Psychiatric Disorders I (Egyptian Psychiatric Association, 1975) has only been sporadically applied in actual practice or evaluated in a systematic or comparative approach since its adoption by the 1st Arab Congress of Psychiatry as the main reference for Psychiatric nosology in the Arab World in 1978. Egyptian patients, language, history, and culture direct the Egyptian clinical sense and practice toward a unique special delineation that colors classification, management, and prognosis of psychiatric disorders. This article delineates proposed axes that revise the current nosology in terms of the ongoing current language. Attempts are made to delineate the axes in well defined operational definitions and to revise Egyptian practice and research activities in light of the new concepts.
