Discusses the effects of anticipation for the birth of a son on marital psychopathology and on maternal and paternal psychopathology. The effects of technical innovations that permit determination of a child's sex before birth on parental mental health are also considered. Two case histories representative of depression accompanied by Oedipal or narcissistic complexes associated with the anticipation of the birth of a son are discussed.
