Discusses the relation among normality, pathology, and culture with reference to recent ethnological studies that underline the importance of cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic factors in determining the development, interpretation, and diagnosis of psychopathologic disorders. Methodological problems involved in using diagnostic tests developed for a specific cultural or socioeconomic group in other groups are considered in relation to several studies on schizophrenia, depression, and child-adolescent psychopathology among Algerian, Arab, and Berber cultural groups.
