80 Saudi Arabian males with social phobia who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III--Revised (DSM-III--R) criteria were evaluated psychiatrically and socially according to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) social withdrawal scale standardized to the Saudi population. Ss were empirically grouped as mild, moderate, or severe cases. Ss were also evaluated symptomatically according to an anxiety-depression scale to give ratings of depression and anxiety, separately and in combination. 37.5 and 55% of the Ss were mild-moderately and severely anxious, respectively; 55 and 34% were mild-moderately and severely depressed, respectively. No linear correlation occurred between the level of anxiety or depression and the severity of social phobia.
