Surveyed 419 people (aged 16-88 yrs) in northern Jordan to examine attitudes toward extended (EF) and nuclear family (NF) types, using 2 attitude scales. Level of education and marital status influenced attitudes toward the EF, but not the NF structure. Men tended to view the NF structure more favorably than did women, but there were no significant gender differences regarding the EF type. Middle age (22-40 yrs) seemed to sensitize attitudes toward both family structures. Generally, all Ss had more positive attitudes and feelings toward the traditional EF than toward the more modern NF structure, supporting the idea that the weakening of the EF structure has not loosened emotional kinship ties in this society.
