Conceptualizes the psychological problems (illiteracy, alienation, delinquency, drug addiction) of the children of Maghrebi immigrants in France (from the perspective of a psychoanalyst of Maghrebi extraction) as primarily due to the Ss' mainstreaming difficulties and the superimposition of one language and culture onto another. In contrast to their parents, who enthusiastically learned French and became the privileged interlocutors and interpreters of their non-Francophone parents, 2nd-generation immigrant children are not at home either in Arabic or French. Their psychological refuge is a "lingua franca" called "Verlan," containing elements of both Arabic and French.
