Determined the incidence of factors associated with subsequent parasuicide and/or fatal outcome in a cohort of 92 consecutive parasuicidal patients seen at a Kuwaiti general hospital who were followed up for 2 yrs at 6-mo intervals. Predictors of further suicidal behavior identified included poor quality marriages in females, self-poisoning by prescribed drugs, past history of depression, previous parasuicide, dependence on alcohol, and chronic family problems. Repeaters' level of social functioning was 3 times lower than that of nonrepeaters, and psychiatric morbidity was detected in a sizable number of repeaters at the end of the study.
