Examined the relationship between depression in situations of conflict and a variety of risk factors for 192 mothers (aged 20-53 yrs) of young children in Beirut, Lebanon. Ss were interviewed concerning life experiences, coping strategies, and social networks. Ss also completed an Arabic version of the Beck Depression Inventory. Many of the same factors associated with Ss' depressive symptoms were found in previous samples in the US (E. E. Beckham and W. R. Leber, 1985). The ongoing war in Lebanon was not found to be different in kind from other events in terms of its effects on mental health.
