Examined the validity of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) classification as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), as based on symptomatology of 3 groups of 6-9 yr old Lebanese children. 22 Ss presenting with chronic symptoms of PTSD, 25 Ss presenting with simple phobia (i.e., test phobia), and 33 nonclinical controls were assessed using the Children's PTSD Inventory (P. Saigh, 1987), the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, the Children's Depression Inventory, and the Conners Teacher Rating Scale. PTSD Ss evinced markedly higher levels of anxiety, depression, and misconduct than the clinical and nonclinical Ss. The mean scores of the PTSD Ss exceeded the normative means for the measures used. Results provide an empirical basis of support for the PTSD classification as it applies to 6-9 yr old children.
