Investigated the psychological well-being and stress reactions of 231 male and 109 female Swedish United Nations (UN) soldiers by means of questionnaires, self-rating scales, interviews, and a personality inventory test. Ss reported the desire for a change, curiosity about life, and idealism as reasons for applying for UN service. Incidence of psychic disturbances in childhood and adolescence was low. Despite findings of somatic anxiety, psychic anxiety, and muscular tension among females; impulsiveness and monotony avoidance among males; and a relatively high level of alcohol consumption among all Ss; most Ss were well adjusted to military life.
