Studied the validity of an Arabic version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Human subjects: 56 adults (students from the University of Jordan) (Group 1); 80 adults (students from the University of Jordan) (Group 2); 635 adults (students from the University of Jordan) (Group 3). Ss in Group 1 were clinically assessed to determine the presence and degree of depression using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) criteria, and they were divided into depressed and nondepressed groups. Differences between the 2 groups were measured using the BDI. Test-retest reliability was assessed for Ss in Group 2 1 wk later. A Cronbach alpha internal consistency reliability coefficient was calculated on Ss in Group 3. Factor analysis was conducted on the responses of Ss in Group 3 to explain the overall variation in Beck's list. (English abstract)
