The 1-stage case-identification method, using the Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), was applied in a pilot study for estimating the prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders among 100 Saudi primary-care patients. The total prevalence rate of depression was 17% and of anxiety, 16%. About 7% of the sample suffered both depression and anxiety.
