A retrospective analysis of 1,978 parasuicide (attempted suicide) patients admitted to general hospitals and reported to the police from 1980 to 1985 showed that 80% of the Ss were under the age of 28 yrs and that the female:male ratio was 1.3:1, in agreement with previous observations (e.g., M. Weissman; see PA, Vol 52:12714). In nearly 66% of the Ss, their acts followed either a disordered interpersonal relationship or a reaction to stress and frustration. Hardly any of the Ss received a psychiatric assessment, and the fate of those at high suicide risk was unclear. Reorganization of psychiatric services is urged.
