Studied 126 female psychiatric outpatients (aged 15-55 yrs), 94 of whom were from monogamous marriages and 32 of whom were from polygamous marriages. Demographic and clinical information revealed that there was a high proportion of polygamous women among psychiatric outpatients (25.4%) as compared with their proportion in the general population (11.5%). The percentage of monogamous wives in outpatient care was 74.6% in comparison with 88.5% in the general population. It was also found that more senior (first) wives were under treatment than were junior (later) wives.
