Discusses intermittent alcoholism as a masked depression, citing 6 cases from the authors' clinical experience to support this thesis. All Ss, treated for acute alcoholic episodes with psychiatric complications, showed both somatic and psychological symptoms associated with depression, but an accurate diagnosis was possible only during the Ss' alcohol-free periods. The Ss' positive response to antidepressants confirms the accuracy of the diagnosis.
