All Ss, treated for acute alcoholic episodes with psychiatric complications, showed both somatic and psychological symptoms associated with depression, but an accurate diagnosis was possible only during the Ss' alcohol-free periods. The Ss' positive response to antidepressants confirms the accuracy of the diagnosis.
