Summary: Opiate and cocaine addiction in Morocco. The Centre National de Prevention et de Recherche en Toxicomanie experience The objective of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical aspects of opiate and cocaine abuse and dependence among residents of the Centre National de Preventionet de Recherche en Toxicomanie (CNPRT= National Drug Addiction Prevention and Research Centre) at Arrazi psychiatric hospital between April 2000 and April 2009. This retrospective, descriptive study was based on the medical records of patients admitted for withdrawl. The main study parameters were sociodemographic characteristics, the nature and type of psychoactive substance use, comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders, as well as complementary assessments. The 190 patients recruited in the study were males with a mean age of 32.24 years, 63.7% were single, 59% had completed secondary schooling, 36.8% were unemployed and 51.6% had a relatively high socioeconomic level. The mean age of onset of substance abuse was 24 years, mainly as a result of the influence of friends (74.4%). Simultaneous use of cocaine and heroin was recorded in 47.4% of residents. These substances were moslty smoked (48.9%), but also inhaled (17.4%) and injected (14.2%). Hepatitis B serology was positive in one patient (0.5%)and Hepatitis C serology was positive in nine patients (4.7%). Preventive measures and prespectives to improve the management of drug users are also considered.
