The purpose of this study is investigating both the psychosocial characteristics and needs of adolescents (12-18 years of age) with Thalassemia Major. Interviews, field observation and questionnaires were administered on a sample of (41) patients in a public hospital in Amman. The major findings were: Most of them suffered from the implications of the disease; school performance was not affected whereas a significant percent of patients hid their illness from their friends; most male patients complained that Thalassemia Major affects their sports; severe anxiety symptoms were evident on most of the patients; family coping was mildly affected; and signs of denial were evident on a significant number of patients. Patients expressed their need for more information on the disease, its causes and implications; psychosocial support groups are needed to be formed in hospitals; and some suggestions were given to upgrade the medical services provided; and the need to design prevention and awareness raising campaigns throughout Jordan. Specific recommendations were made based on the findings of the study in terms of prevention strategies and future studies to help eliminate the negative implications of Thalassemia Major on patients and their families.
