Explored the efficacy of using bibliotherapy and cognitive counseling in a school setting to enhance positive citizenship ideals in secondary school students. Ss were 125 students (aged 18-20 yrs) from 6 secondary schools in Alfashir principality, Sudan. Ss were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups for bibliotherapy and cognitive counseling respectively and a control group. Ss took the Citizenship Attitude Scale before and after the treatment. The scores of pre-treatment rating were compared with the scores of post-treatment rating among groups with t test for testing 2 null hypotheses: (1) that Ss who received bibliotherapy and cognitive counseling would not have significantly better perception of citizenship ideals than those who were not exposed; and (2) that Ss who received bibliotherapy would not have better perception of citizenship ideals than Ss who received cognitive counseling. The results indicate that there were significant differences in the efficacy of the 2 methods for positively fostering citizenship ideals among youth in favor of bibliotherapy. The results demonstrate that bibliotherapy can serve as a guidance technique for enhancing positive citizenship ideals among youth.
