Presents postmortem studies of Palestinian suicide bombers, with data collected from families and friends of 9 men (aged 19-25) who undertook suicide missions between 1993 and 1996. The authors collected psychological, behavioral, and social information on these Ss and 9 controls who were interviewed. This study demonstrates that some characteristics of the individual and his traumatic experiences are associated with suicide bombing. To understand the Palestinian suicide bomber, the authors propose a multilevel ecological/dynamic model, which considers the sociopolitical matrix interacting with gender identity, loss, religious sentiment, and the death of optimism as a result of the political situation.
