Studied the prevalence and severity of depression among 54 patients with definite Parkinson's disease (PD) who were selected from attendants at outpatient clinics in Baghdad hospitals. The presence of depression was diagnosed by using a semi-structured interview based on ICD--10 criteria, and its severity was rated with the Beck Depression Inventory (Concise Arabic Version). The motor disability of PD was determined according to the Hoehn and Yahr scale. The patient group was matched for age and sex with 52 healthy controls. The results show that the rate of depression in patients with PD was 42.59%, which is highly significant compared with 7.69% in controls. There was a positive correlation between the severity of depression and severity of motor disability. 47% of depressed PD patients were in the age group 50-59 yrs, and the rate of depression was nearly equal between males and females (statistically not significant). It is concluded that depression is common in PD patients and its relation to motor disability is supported by this study.
