Presents the case of a 39-yr-old Arabian woman seen at a psychiatric clinic in Qatar for a variety of somatic symptoms. Her psychological conflicts were related to changes in her society, a traditionally polygamous society, including the evolving social status of women. Contributions to the S's symptoms were made by culturally shared beliefs about the monorole of women in procreation and mothering and religious sanctions against contraception. Intergenerational conflict and interparental conflict about modern vs. traditional orientations precipitated professional help seeking for restoration of family harmony. These cultural issues affected the patters of presenting symptoms, the doctor-patient relationship, and expectations from therapy. Adequate understanding of the patient, the role of maintaining family relationships, and the society at large allowed the therapist to carry out a culturally relevant and successful psychotherapy.
