Examined the self-reported characteristics of juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs). 485 male adolescents (aged 11-17 yrs) being evaluated as possible JSOs completed the Abel Questionnaire for Boys (G. G. Abel, 1995). Results show that 60.8% of JSOs reported involvement in child molestation, 31.6% in pornography, and 10%-30% in exhibitionism, fetishism, frottage, voyeurism, obscene phone calls, and phone sex. Compared with adult males, JSOs had greater frequencies of fetishism, obscene phone calls, child molestation, and phone sex. JSOs reported engaging in 9-46 acts of sexual offense. The average age of onset for the sexual offenses was 10-12 yrs. JSOs with low social desirability scores reported more sexual offenses than did Ss with high social desirability scores. Of Ss who reported never being accused of child molestation, 41.5% reported they had molested a younger child. It is concluded that assessment and treatment of JSOs should begin as soon as they are identified.
