Discusses the need for the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors code of ethics to deal with teacher-student relationships. Ethical standards for instructors of marriage and family counselors have not been well defined in the code. Instructors need to be held accountable for their behaviors with beginning student clinicians, and instructor-student role demarcation must be clear. Being the authority figure, the instructor is responsible for setting appropriate limits and boundaries, with the focus on the student rather than the instructor. Instructors are directly responsible not only for their teaching, supervising, and mentoring, but for their interpersonal behavior as well.
