Studied the effect of stressful life events and social support networks on depression in a sample of male and female immigrants in Spain. 81 Moroccans, 69 Filipinos, and 23 Senegalese Ss were administered the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Mannheim Interview on Social Support (H. O. Veiel, 1990), and a 12-item scale on perceived problems (Die and W. C. Seelbach, 1988). An ANOVA and linear regression analysis were performed. The results indicate that depression was most prevalent among Ss with unfavorable life circumstances and among Ss with a perceived insufficient social support system. An interactive effect between problem severity and sufficiency of social support was found: Social support had a buffering effect on depressive symptoms only when Ss had multiple personal problems in various life areas.
