Introduction: Manic episodes are considered one of the most sever psychiatric disorders. Patients with manic episodes usually require in patient treatment. Several prospective and retrospective studies have shown that ECT is effective in the treatment of mania and have suggested that ECT lead to rapid remission of manic episodes. But none of the studies evaluated the economics of using ECT in the treatment of mania episodes. In this study we attempted to evaluate some of these economical aspects of ECT treatment of manic patients. We specifically attempted to find the answer of the following questions: 1 -does the use of ECT in the treatment of patients with manic episodes leads to a shorter duration of hospitalization ? 2-if this is the case, are the cost savings more than those of the ECT sessions.
Methodology: This was a case record study of patients with manic episodes who were admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Okasha's hospital for psychological medicine in the last two years. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they received ECT or not. The diagnosis was confirmed through the use of SCID-IV- on the case records. We recorded the severity of the episode, treatment received number of ECT sessions and the duration of hospitalization. We estimated the cost of stay for one day in the hospital and the cost of a single ECT session as being the average of the two hospitals.
Results: and Conclusion: The preliminary results of this study will bc presented in the meeting. Moreover their implications for our region where the number of available beds are not enough and the need for effective, rapid and economical treatment is of utmost importance.
