:(from the chapter) Discusses the influence of the Arab-Muslim culture on the main types of anxiety disorders, including their development and treatment. The prevalence of anxiety disorders in Arab-Muslim countries is noted, followed by sections focusing on the role of Islamic culture and religion in panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Sociocultural factors are discussed as they affect the selection, process, and outcome of drug therapy and individual or group psychotherapy in the management of anxiety disorders. These preliminary findings need more empirical data based on nationwide epidemiological studies and controlled evaluations related to the prevalence and management of anxiety disorders in the Arab-Islamic cultural setting.
