The purpose of this study was to validate the psychometric characteristics of the General Health Test in a normal sample of 648 individuals as well as a sample of 188 psychiatric patients from the psychiatric hospital in Kuwait. The results showed that the test has high validity and reliability, measuring 7 psychological dimensions: anxiety/insomnia, suicidal thought, general illness, sleep disturbance, social dysfunction, low self-confidence, and depression. The anxiety/insomnia, sleep problem, social dysfunction, low self-confidence, and depression factors appeared as independent dimensions in most studies and in the test manual, while the other dimensions merged with other factors. Moreover, the results showed that the test can successfully discriminate between normal and abnormal cases. The study suggested reduction in the test items when used in the future to detect psychiatric cases in Kuwaiti samples.
