Studied the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, with emphasis on suicidal thoughts and behavior. Ss were 183 mostly male adults (mean age 34.3 yrs) with schizophrenia in Morocco. 70 Ss were inpatients, and 113 Ss were outpatients. Ss were interviewed with a questionnaire on sociodemographic data, premorbid functioning, schizophrenic and depressive antecedents, and current depressive and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 44.3%, consistent with comparable studies. Suicidal thoughts occurred in 21.9% of Ss, and antecedents of suicidal behavior occurred in 22.4% of cases. Depression was shown to be a potential cause of suicidal behavior in 1 out of 5 patients.
