Presents an review of behavioral research concentrating on the abuse of psychoactive substances in Egypt. Apart from some clinical reports on the psychiatric treatment of abusers in Egypt no other comparable research exists in Arab countries. Most of the Egyptian studies in this area were carried out under the sponsorship of the National Center for Social and Criminological Research. The stages of this research, conducted between 1957 and 1990, are elaborated upon.
