The dynamic role of social support in the relationship between high life stress and depressive symptoms

Aimed at finding out the negative effects of stress on psychological health, the positive effects of social support in reducing both stress and depressive symptoms resulting from the increase in stress levels. Both stressful life events questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and a social support questionnaire were administered to a sample of 324 males (aged 24-35 yrs). Significant differences were found between low and high stress Ss in depressive symptoms in favor of high stress Ss. Also, there were significant differences between low and high stress Ss in social support in favor of low stress Ss. There were also significant differences between low and high social support Ss in depressive symptoms in favor of low social support Ss. Low and high depressive symptoms were significantly different among high stress Ss in social support in favor of low depressive symptoms Ss.
