Examined the feasibility of screening for depression in teenagers by obtaining self-reports of depressive symptoms from a community sample of teenage boys in Al Ain City, United Arab Emirates. 446 13-18 yr old boys provided self-reports using an Arabic version of the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire. Utilizing various cut-off points, the boys reported significant depressive symptoms varying between 9.9% and 30.7%. These rates are viewed as comparable to or slightly higher than those reported elsewhere in the world. The author relates these findings to the need to develop psychiatric services for young people.
