Assessed the effectiveness of the Social Skills Training Program for children with severe home/school behavioral problems attending the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit inpatient or day care program. Eight 10-14 yr old boys, 3 of whom were attending the inpatient program and 5 the day care program, had diagnoses including oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and adjustment disorder. The boys were exposed to 11 sessions of skills training twice weekly for 6 wks. The sessions included topics related to classroom behavior, effective communication, problem solving and coping with stress. The performance of these skills was measured by parents and teachers before and after the training period. Both parents and teachers reported a significant increase in frequency of use of these skills.
