Investigated the patterns of deliberate non-fatal self-harm in Saudi ArabiAll patients attending the largest general hospital in Jeddah City with a recognizable self-harm behavior were prospectively assessed by the psychiatrist. Their characteristic features and clinical data were analyzed using chi square for any significant statistical differences. Only 55 patients (45 females; aged 13-43 yrs) from a total of 47,754 patients admitted to the hospital during a 9-mo period were referred with the diagnosis of either overdose or suicide attempt. It is concluded that although the rates of deliberate non-fatal self-harm in Arabic countries may still be considerably low in comparison to those reported from Western countries, the current indication is that many of these countries may witness a considerable increase, unless they maintain their strong religious affiliations and emphasize the importance of preserving their traditional family structure.
