Surveyed psychological disorders in mental health settings. In addition to the European centers, there were centers in the Middle East, in both North and South America, in Japan, China, and in developing countries. Almost 26,000 patients were screened with the General Health Questionnaire, 5,438 of whom were interviewed using the composite international diagnostic interview (CIDI), and 2,705 Ss were followed up at 12 mo. 24% of consecutive attenders had a mental disorder recognized by the CIDI, a further 9% having disorders that just fell short of diagnostic criteriThe most common diagnoses across the world were depression, generalized anxiety disorder, neurasthenia, and problems with alcohol. There was a weak relationship between physical and psychological ill-health, but a very strong relationship between psychological health and both social and occupational disability.
