Attitudes and conceptions of parents concerning the mentally retarded in Jordan.

Examined the impact of such variables as contact, education, sex, and age on the attitudes and concepts of parents of mentally retarded and normal children toward the mentally retarded using the Tymchuck test. Results were compared with findings of similar studies in other countries. Ss with retarded children had better attitudes than did those with normal children, consistent with other countries. Better-educated Ss with both normal and mentally retarded children had better attitudes and conceptions, and female Ss knew more factual knowledge of the mentally handicapped. Females with both normal and retarded children, educated or not, had more positive attitudes than did males.
