Attempted to identify personality characteristics of different groups of drug abusers, comparing them with nonusers, and investigated the relationship between drug abuse and several psychological variables. This study aimed to provide information on this issue in relation to Arabian countries, since most of the previous studies were carried out in western countries. 122 20-35 yr old Egyptian drug abusers (32 cannabis, 30 opiods, 30 polydrug, and 30 barbiturates abusers) were assessed using the Arabic version of the Personality Assessment Inventory (M. Hannourah, 1994). Results indicate that (1) statistically significant differences were found between all drug abusers and nonusers on the following scales: anxiety, somatic complaints, anxiety related disorders, borderline features, drug problems, aggression, suicidal ideation, stress and nonsupport in favor of drug abusers; and (2) drug problems correlated positively with anxiety, somatic complaints, depression, borderline features, antisocial features, aggression, and dominance. However, drug problems correlate negatively with phobias, traumatic stress, nonsupport, and treatment rejection in the drug abuser sample.
