According to psychoanalysis, the self uses much of its resources fighting or controlling anxiety and, as a result, hinders cognitive processes such as remembering and attention. This study investigated the relationship between short- and long-term memory. An inventory of neurosis and an anxiety scale were employed on a sample of 41 university students in LibySome positive correlations were found between anxiety and both memories, neurosis tendency, and long-term memory, but no correlation was found with short-term memory. A low degree of anxiety could have instigated effect on memory but a high degree might have hindered memory. This tends to be in accordance with other findings on emotion in general.
