Addresses issues concerning the application of different psychotherapy techniques and principles to the Arab culture. Arab culture is strongly patriarchal, which influences the shaping of personality structure as well as the mode of psychotherapy. Another strong influence on successful psychotherapy are the teachings and principles of Islam. In addition, Arab psychotherapists and psychiatrists have observed that the Arab patient is resistant to emotional exploration and insight oriented therapy. For this reason, cognitive therapy has been chosen by many Arab psychotherapists since it avoids the vagueness and abstraction of explorative therapy. Several aspects of a proposed culturally oriented technique of psychotherapy are provided. In order to provide a more comprehensive cultural model of therapy, Pan Arab research in this area is essential.
