Reports the case of a 17-yr-old boy from Iraq who was referred to an inpatient psychiatric unit for evaluation of persistent appetite and sleep disturbances, anxiety, isolation, and unusual behavior. This case is presented as a means to (1) describe Arab immigrant cultural issues that may influence psychiatric diagnosis and management, (2) demonstrate how a team that includes a cultural consultant can influence the diagnosis and outcome of psychiatric care, and (3) describe components of the role of the cultural consultant in psychiatric care (e.g., family therapy).
