Examined the utility of the Psychosomatic Symptom Checklist (PSC) in 80 hospitalized psychosomatic patients (aged 18+ yrs) compared with 80 hospitalized medical patients (aged 18+ yrs). A 2nd sample of 187 adult psychosomatic patients was studied to examine the relationship among psychosomatic distress, depression, and functional impairment. While psychosomatic patients scored significantly higher than comparable medical patients on the PSC, discriminant analyses indicated that the PSC was not able to identify psychosomatic patients in this inpatient medical setting. Factor analyses and correlations showed that the PSC was positively related to increased depression and decreased functional status.
