Explores the difficult problems experienced by Moslem (Maghrebi) immigrants to France in postcolonial times. These individuals are beset by divided loyalties and the question of whether to reject or embrace assimilation, secularism, and Western education. These conscious and unconscious conflicts are reflected in French language writings by Arab immigrants. Traditional Islamic writings are discussed from a Freudian, psycholinguistic perspective. Regression and the return of the repressed are described as the result of journeys to the country of origin by Moslems residing in France, who then return to their new country.
