Clinical data for 39 female patients (aged 17-40 yrs) with puerperal psychosis in Saudi Arabia were compared with published data (e.g., R. E. Kendall et al; see record 19 81-33415-001) for female patients admitted with a similar diagnosis in Scotland. Results reveal more similarities than differences among the groups and indicate that most cases had an affective disorder. Most Ss had onset within the 1st 2 wks after delivery, and past history of mental illness was a major risk factor. There were significant differences between the groups in parity, duration of illness prior to admission, and presence of motility disturbances. These differences were attributed to sociocultural factors.
